WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH ESSENTIAL OILS?

Perfumes have become a dirty word due to the toxic phthalates and other disruptive chemicals which can have long effects on a person’s health and hormones. But a lot of people are now turning to essential oils, thinking that these oils are a 100% natural and safe alternative. But unfortunately, research shows that this is not the case, and this is why we have chosen not to incorporate essential oils in most of our products. It is important to note however, that not all essential oils contain the below risks and if you are to use them, ensure you do your research into the specific oil you want to use, and source only from the most pure, reliable sources.

These are just a few reasons why research has shown that most essential oils should be avoided when possible, particularly when trying to balance hormones, when pregnant and around young babies and children.

Phytochemicals: Many essential oils contain potent phytochemicals that can disrupt hormonal function. For instance, some oils have estrogenic properties, which can interfere with the endocrine system and potentially lead to hormonal imbalances.

Toxicity and Allergens: Certain essential oils can be toxic when ingested or applied directly to the skin without proper dilution. Allergic reactions, skin irritation, or even respiratory issues can occur in sensitive individuals. What we put onto our skin is absorbed into our bodies. So if you wouldn’t eat it, why put it on your skin?

Hormone Disruption: Oils such as tea tree and lavender have been linked to hormonal disruptions in some studies. They may mimic estrogen and inhibit androgen activity, which can have adverse effects, especially in children and adolescents.

Contaminants: Not all essential oils are created equal and the production and sale of essential oils in Australia is not heavily regulated, meaning a lot of providers can sell low-quality or adulterated oils can contain harmful additives or contaminants that can further exacerbate health issues.

Overuse: Excessive use of essential oils, particularly in poorly ventilated areas, can lead to negative health effects such as headaches, dizziness, or nausea.

Pregnancy Risks: Some essential oils contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like toluene and methanol that may be toxic in high doses. Ingestion or improper topical use carries a risk of embryotoxicity (toxicity to the embryo) and has been associated with birth defects in some animal studies.

For these reasons, it's essential to use essential oils cautiously, and most certainly avoid putting these onto your skin when trying to regulate hormones, detox and especially when pregnant.
